In January 2012 a group of 5 boys from Wester Hailes Education Centre put together a presentation about the Youth Agency which they presented to a judging panel and representatives from the school, as part of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Scotland supported by the Wood Family Trust. The most discerning presentation group was awarded £3,000 to grant towards their charity. The YPI is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness among young people about philanthropy. Evaluation on the initiative has shown that teachers feel it improves pupils’ teamwork, presentation skills, research skills, communication and decision making.
The boys have been attending our Drop in Provision for many years and took part in a Streetwork session in order to see how our other services are run. Their presentation was highly emotive with the boys describing how much they felt the Youth Agency had impacted on their lives. One young person commented how much it had helped during the transition between primary to secondary school and another spoke about how it had helped him to make friends with other young people. As a result of their presentation, the judging panel awarded the group the £3,000 towards the work of the Youth Agency. We were extremely impressed by the group’s presentation, how frank they were and the thought that they had put into it. We were delighted that all their hard work and commitment paid off and they were very pleased with the result!
