As darker nights are drawing in it is time for Val to take a trip down memory lane and let us in on a secret or two.
What was your favourite song/band/type of music growing up?
I was a teenager in the early 80’s so I tend to like punk and alternative 80’s stuff like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Devo. I also love The Jam and Madness. My favourite all time song is Golden Brown by the Stranglers.
What was your favourite game/activity?
Frustration
What were you like when you were at school? What subjects were good/bad at?
I hung around with loads of people, some days I’d be with the smokers and other days I’d be inside playing table tennis. I loved school particularly S5 and S6 and my favourite subject was English but that’s because I had an amazing teacher.
“When I was young”……….
I never really liked playing with dolls and turned my dolls pram into a bogey (that’s what we called them in Fife but it was a cart).
Tell us a random fact that no one knows about you…
I’ve been a Youth Worker too long so there’s not really anything that folk don’t know….the thing that least people know is that I have a lump on my lip that beats at the same time as my heart!
What is your secret talent/party trick?
I don’t really have a talent, so jealous of people who do but I can remember thousands of song lyrics.
What is your favourite memory of working at the Youth Agency?
I have so many memories as I’ve worked her now for over 22 years but the best thing has been meeting all the amazing young people I’ve worked with over that time. Some of whose children now come along.
What is the funniest thing that has happened when you have been working?
It’s funny now but it wasn’t at the time. I knocked myself out playing uni-hoc. I fell sideways and hit my head against a ledge and because I also fell into a net at the same time I had the marks of the net on my face for about a week.
If you could invite anyone along to the Pyramid for a night who would it be and why?
Gorgeous George (Clooney) for obvious reasons but also he might be impressed by what we do and offer us some funding.
How did you become a Youth Worker?
I used to work beside a woman whose husband was a youth worker and I really liked the sound of it so offered to volunteer.
What is the worst thing that has happened to you when you have been working?
As well as being the funniest things, knocking myself out playing uni-hoc was also one of the worst things that has happened to me when I have been working. I’ve also fallen quite a lot when I’ve been doing streetwork, always on cold winter nights and into puddles.
